Lakhimpur emerges as rising tourism hub with surging footfall and new eco-wellness destination

Lucknow, Aug 26 (UNI) Tourism in Lakhimpur is gaining new strength, with the district recording over 57 lakh visitors in 2024 and nearly 6.5 lakh tourists in just the first quarter of 2025.
Building on this rising footfall, Uttar Pradesh Tourism has taken a decisive step towards steady and sustainable tourism growth by announcing the development of Chandan Chowki as a flagship eco-tourism and wellness destination under a public private partnership.
The project will feature world-class accommodation, a wellness centre, adventure facilities, restaurants, and community-led experiences such as homestays, souvenir shops, and weekend haats. It will operate on a sustainable model, prioritising prefabricated and low-impact structures to preserve the ecosystem, while generating revenue and creating livelihoods for local communities. The Tharu tribe and self help groups will play a key role in offering authentic cultural experiences, making Chandan Chowki a blend of tourism and community empowerment.
Situated close to the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, the destination is designed to expand Uttar Pradesh’s eco tourism circuit by linking wildlife, wellness, culture, and rural life. This integrated approach aims to draw domestic travellers, NCR visitors, and international wellness seekers turning towards nature based experiences. UP Tourism & Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said Uttar Pradesh’s eco-tourism initiatives reflect the broader development roadmap. “Our vision of Viksit UP is about opening new avenues in every district. Chandan Chowki reflects how eco-tourism, wellness, and community participation can come together to create opportunities and strengthen our growth story. From Dudhwa to Chandan Chowki, Uttar Pradesh will set benchmarks in responsible and sustainable tourism for the nation.”
Mukesh Kumar Meshram, Principal Secretary, Tourism & Culture, added that Chandan Chowki is envisioned as a model for responsible tourism. “Today’s travellers want experiences rooted in nature and culture. By integrating Chandan Chowki with Dudhwa and other reserves, we are creating a sustainable tourism model that empowers local communities, highlights the heritage of the Tharu tribe, and strengthens UP’s tourism identity.”
Prakhar Misra, Director UP Tourism (Eco), underlined the project’s long-term vision. “Chandan Chowki is being designed as a holistic retreat where visitors will find wellness, adventure, and authentic rural life together. Built with eco-friendly principles like prefabricated structures and low-impact development, it will stand as an example of sustainable tourism that protects the environment while benefiting people.”
